boss tom’s golden bockComments Off

Posted In Uncategorized

“Boss Tom’s Golden Bock is Boulevard’s new seasonal release for early spring. A bock is traditionally a lager beer with somewhat robust malt character. The word “bock” also means “billy goat”, and images of goats are often used as a symbol of the style. The smooth, soft maltiness of Boss Tom’s is complemented by a restrained hop presence. The mild warming quality of the beer makes it perfect for days when there is still a bit of a chill in the air. The beer finishes with a lingering dryness, and just a hint of caramel.”

Malts: Pale, Munich, Pilsner, Caramel and Wheat
Hops: Hallertau and Perle
ABV: 6.1%
IBUs: 33

A little background on how the name came to be… Thomas Pendergast controlled Kansas City and Jackson County, Missouri as a political boss. “Boss Tom” gave workers jobs and helped elect politicians during the Great Depression, becoming wealthy in the process. In the 1890s he worked in his brother James Pendergast’s saloon in the West Bottoms. Here, his older brother, a member of Kansas City, Missouri’s city council, taught him about the city’s political system and the advantages of controlling blocks of voters. The Pendergasts and Joe Shannon were both leaders in the local Democratic Party. They adopted labels to distinguish their factions. The Pendergast’s faction was called the Goats and Shannon’s faction was known as the Rabbits. Pendergast ruled from a simple, two-story yellow brick building at 1908 Main Street, not far from the brewery. Pendergast has other direct ties to the beer business here in Kansas City, notably as the owners of a local distributorship after the repeal of Prohibition.
