Stepping off the dancefloor and into your head, this set is a perfect compliment for the calm after the storm. Mills and Howard met for the first time at last summer’s farewell to Crosstown Station, Errrybody’s House. One thing was apparent; they were both purists in their approach to playing deep music. After several closet jam sessions, a call and response started to develop in the mixes. Playing back to back, track for track, this mix features a chill-out sound that journeys from lush pads to spacey atmospheres.

1. What are your spring / summer plans?
I’ll be at the Riot Room once a month and I really want to bring some new people in. Seems like it’s the same show everywhere you go these days. Other than that, get out on the water as much as possible, BBQ and get outdoors. I love Summer.
2. What producers are doing it for you right now?
Wattie Green. That kid is just on fire right now. Another one I’m really feeling is South of Roosevelt from Chicago.
3. Who were some of your influences when you first started djing?
Living in Dallas it was locals like Robert Taylor and Cle’. Dallas was big on breaks at the time too (1993) and I liked Eric Davenport a lot. But when I heard Derrick Carter for the first time at a club called SOA, it was all over.
4. What was the biggest change you noticed in club / dance culture when you started playing records out again?
Wow. It’s completely different now. The biggest change I think though is the popularity EDM has gained. Another thing is hauling your gear around everywhere. It was so nice to just show up with records and headphones. Makes me feel silly for complaining about how heavy records were.
5. What is your favorite BBQ joint in kc?
Gates, Hands down. But the funny thing is, and I am embarrassed to admit this, I’ve never been to Oklahoma Joes. Everyone swears by that place. But I’m fine with “Hi! May I help you!” .
6. Where do you see the dance music scene in KC going?
I can see it possibly coming full circle back to Techno and House. I mean more of the underground feel and away from so much Dubstep and Moombahtan. I’m honestly not sure though that’ll happen though.
7. What were your thoughts going into this mix?
I tried to think of nothing. I kept pressing myself for a new mix and it just wasn’t working. So I stepped back for a week and just got on and played without thinking too much or planning anything. That always seems to work best for me. That leaves room for a few glitches, but I like that. It lets people know it’s live and not pieced together in some program.
